Glossary of Terms
Architectural millwork
Base moulding
Wood moulding used at the intersection of the wall and floor
Chair rail moulding
Wood moulding used on the wall between the floor and ceiling usually 30-42” off floor. Chair rail moulding is often used where wainscote is applied to the bottom of the wall, or where walls are divided with wallpaper
Crown moulding
Wood moulding used at the intersection of the wall and ceiling.
Dimension Lumber
Wood sized to a specific width and/or length, minimizes waste and labor for end user. Also known as s4s lumber
Door casing
Wood moulding used around the door jamb to bridge gap from jamb to wall
Door jamb
The wood pc that a door is normally hung on and swings into. Usually the thickness of the wall.
Edge glued panels
Wood glued side to side to make a wide pc. Used for door panels ,table tops, etc.
Hardwood lumber
Oak, cherry, maple, etc. used for architectural millwork.
Laminated squares
Wood glued face to face to produce a square suitable for wood turnings such as balusters and newel posts
Radius moulding
moulding cut on an arch or curve to trim out an arched window or door.
Softwood Lumber
Pine, fir, cedar, etc. Used for architectural millwork and construction.
Stave core rail
The horizontal piece of wood on a panel door manufactured with a wood core with solid wood edges and veneers glued around the core. Stays very flat and straight for door construction
Stave core stile
The vertical piece of wood on a panel door manufactured with a wood core with solid wood edges and veneers glued around the core. Stays very flat and straight for door construction.
Thin sawn lumber
Lumber that is 1/8-1/2” thick , used for small projects, door veneers, and curved arch door and window jambs
Window casing
Wood moulding used around the window frame to bridge gap between window frame and wall
Wood veneer
Thin sawn or sliced real wood used for finished surfaces of furniture, doors, flooring, etc.
